Human Trafficking Awareness
As an English teacher at Oshkosh North High School, I guided a TV production class that received national recognition for our film, “A Deal With Romeo,” addressing human trafficking. The U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking honored us with a second-place national award. The film, depicting a high school student who was unknowingly lured into being trafficked, succeeded due to the students’ empathetic approach. Having witnessed some of my own students involved in human trafficking, I felt a personal responsibility to highlight these issues. The film’s title, “A Deal With Romeo,” refers to a trafficker preying on minors. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, around 800,000 youth are trafficked annually. My goal was to prompt local and national audiences, including parents and students, to recognize the issue’s magnitude.
